About Black Fly

Black flies (family Simuliidae) are 1–5 mm humpbacked flies that breed in fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams. Females are vicious biters that swarm in clouds in late spring across northern regions, causing severe blood loss in livestock and driving animals into frenzied panic. Their blade-like mouthparts create bleeding wounds that itch intensely and can produce toxic reactions in sensitive hosts. In sub-Saharan Africa and Central America, the black fly Simulium damnosum transmits the parasitic filarial worm Onchocerca volvulus, causing river blindness (onchocerciasis) in millions of people.
