About Boxelder Bug

The boxelder bug (Boisea trivittata) is an 11–14 mm black insect with red wing venation that feeds on the seeds of boxelder, maple, and ash trees. It causes minimal plant damage but becomes a major nuisance pest in autumn when thousands aggregate on the warm, south-facing sides of buildings and infiltrate homes seeking overwintering sites. It does not breed indoors, bite, or damage household items, but its fecal spotting stains fabrics and light-colored surfaces, and it emits an unpleasant odor when crushed. Sealing exterior gaps before September is the most effective prevention strategy.
