About European Hornet

The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is the only true hornet established in North America, introduced to the eastern United States in the 1800s. Measuring 25–35 mm, it is the largest vespid wasp in North America and has a distinctively yellow and brown (not yellow and black) striped abdomen. Colonies build large enclosed papery nests in hollow trees, wall voids, and attics, housing up to 400 workers. Unlike yellow jackets, European hornets are active at night, attracted to lights, and will attack humans who approach the nest entrance. Their sting is potent but they are generally less aggressive than yellow jackets away from the nest.

Geographic Distribution
