About Spotted Lanternfly

The spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a visually striking 25 mm planthopper native to China and Vietnam, first confirmed in the United States in Pennsylvania in 2014. Adults have spotted grey forewings and brilliant red hindwings revealed during flight. It feeds on over 70 plant species by sucking phloem sap from stems and trunks, excreting sticky honeydew that promotes black sooty mold and attracts other pests. It poses the greatest threat to grapevines, hops, apples, and hardwood trees. Residents in affected states are legally obligated in some areas to report sightings and destroy egg masses.
