About Northern Black Widow

The northern black widow (Latrodectus variolus) is a venomous spider measuring up to 13 mm (females), with a glossy black body and a typically divided or incomplete red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen — distinguishing it from the southern black widow. It builds irregular cobwebs in dark, sheltered, undisturbed locations: woodpiles, hollow stumps, garages, outbuildings, and rodent burrows. Its venom contains alpha-latrotoxin, causing latrodectism — severe muscle cramps, abdominal rigidity, sweating, and elevated blood pressure. Though rarely fatal in healthy adults with modern medical care, bites require immediate medical evaluation.

Geographic Distribution

This spider is found across Asia, with notable populations in China and surrounding regions.
